2010 - 2011 Dillard's Melton Fellows Bio's

Jerome Bailey

Jerome Bailey is a 19-year-old mass communications major from Houston. His father passed away before he was two years old, and he was raised by a single parent. He is a sophomore at Dillard University, where he has served in various leadership roles, such as Class Gentleman, general manager of Dillard’s WDUB radio station, and a member of the Collegiate 100 Black Men. He has lead the school in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and worked with Habitat for Humanity, among other community service projects. While adhering to a busy schedule, Mr. Bailey has completed over 150 hours of community service in his freshman year alone, in addition to his everyday community involvement, which includes tutoring and mentoring at Miller McCoy Charter School every Wednesday. Mr. Bailey has taught video editing to children since he was a junior in high school. He also interned at a radio station in Houston, where he reported sports live on air, Monday through Friday, for six weeks before returning to his studies in New Orleans. Mr. Bailey is a music producer and poet. He has limited his production during the school year to focus on his studies.

 

Candace Banks

Candace Banks is a 20-year-old psychology major from New Orleans. A minor in women’s studies, she hopes to earn a master’s degree in speech pathology. She is an active member of several campus organizations, including the Student Health Advisory Council, Phi Eta Sigma, the Thompson/Cook Honors Society, and Peer Educators. She currently holds the position of vice-lead fellow.



Cedric Blair

Cedric Blair is a servant of the global community and an admirer of God and all Her beautiful creations. Global service has taken him to Spain, India, Germany, Portugal, Morocco, France, the United Kingdom, and China, where he taught geography in a rural village in Ju County. He is a Harvard Business School Summer Venture in Management fellow, a Melton Foundation fellow, and a UNCFSP Institute for International Public Policy fellow. “We have the responsibility to water and properly tend to the seeds of the future, our children,” Cedric said. “Through love, education, and respect for life, we will ultimately dictate the success of this most precious and priceless crop.” As one of his favorite poets, Deruut, once said, “Time is our only guarantee between life and death, invest it wisely,” and Cedric plans to do just that. A graduating senior from Modesto, Calif., Cedric is majoring in economics and finance. He thanks his family, God, and friends, for their unconditional love, support, and positive influence.


Jasmi Brown

Jasmi Sky Brown, 20, a Houston native, is a graduating senior and an accounting major. In her senior year of high school, she worked closely with managers and executives in the fast-paced environment of American International Group, Inc., which spurred her interest in pursuing a career in accounting and entrepreneurship. During tax season at Dillard University, she volunteers for the VITA Program that provides free income tax preparation assistance to low-income and disabled individuals. She also interned with PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP for two consecutive summers and attended the organization’s Diversity In Leadership Business Conference, where she was announced as a PwC eXceed Scholar. She also interned with Koch Industries as a sales accountant intern.

Jasmi is the president of the Senior Class Council, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a member of the National Association of Black Accountants, the public relations manager of the Melton Foundation, the campus liaison for Management Leadership 4 Tomorrow, and a member of the American Society of Women Accountants.

Upon graduating from Dillard University, she plans to sit for the CPA exam and begin working full-time in the fall. Her ultimate goals are to become the C.E.O. of a non-profit, obtain her doctorate degree, teach in higher education, and practice philanthropy.

Jasmi’s interests and hobbies range from praise dancing and listening to music, to playing basketball and spending time with her family and friends.



Arielle Calloway

Arielle Calloway is a junior mathematics major and biology minor. She hails from the city of Antioch in the Bay Area of California. Arielle is the 2010-2011 Junior Class Council treasurer, the 2010-2011 National Pan-Hellenic Council treasurer, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a mathematics tutor for the Division of Student Success, and last but not least, a member of the public relations team for DUMF.

Arielle is the goofball of goofballs, and if you get to know her, you will understand. She loves music and dancing around, singing in the shower, joking around with her friends, and baking. Arielle LOVES LOVES LOVES her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and collecting buttons.

Shaunessy Carr


Shaunessy Elaine Carr, a 21-year-old political science major from St. Louis, is one the Melton Foundation’s social service project coordinators.
Shaunessy’s activities include being Miss Dillard University 2010-2011, a member of the Political Science Student Association, the co-activities officer of the African World Network Organization, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., an officer on the Student Government Association Executive Council, a member of the VisionQuest Liturgical Dance Company, a member of the Pre-Alumni Council, and a fellow with UNCF’s Social Entrepreneurship Fellowship Program.

Upon graduating from Dillard University, she plans to attend law school. She wants to become an attorney in the public sector, advising not-for-profits and federal agencies facing constitutional law issues. She is deeply interested in pursuing a career in politics. She will be a philanthropist for Dillard University and other not-for-profits, along with serving on numerous boards and committees.

Shaunessy’s interests and hobbies include volunteering, orating, reading, mentoring, leadership, community and social activism, and social entrepreneurship. To conclude, Shaunessy is a young lady that knows just who she is, and whose she is. Her mission in life is to leave this world better than she found it. She wants to continue to live her life rendering God, and enthusiastically guiding and mentoring younger brothers and sisters that she comes in contact with. Excellence and happiness are proven habits for her, and inclinations that she loves to share. Lastly, she is a person who values education, because she knows that education equals freedom, access, opportunities, and much more. However, she does not believe that education should be used to make one human being feel as if they are better than another human being. To her, education should be used for service and to make a change.



TaNieshia Hamilton

TaNieshia Reni Hamilton is a senior psychology major and criminal justice minor from St. Louis. She was born to L’Tanya R. Hamilton and Christopher W. Blount. TaNieshia is actively involved in the Melton Foundation, Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, K.B. Clark Psychology Club, Gamma Sigma Sigma National Service Sorority, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Outside of Dillard’s gates, TaNieshia serves several communities through her volunteer efforts with College Summit. She hopes to obtain her Psy.D. in clinical forensic psychology.



Jasmine Hardman


Born on July 29, 1991, Jasmine is a sophomore biology major. She conducts research for the Louisiana Alliance for Minority Participation, tutors with Dillard University’s Student Support Services, serves as a resident assistant in Williams Hall, and is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society. Over the summer she participated in the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where she shadowed doctors and learned what it takes to gain admittance to medical school. She aspires to become a doctor of orthopedics, specializing in sports medicine. In her free time, she enjoys performing community service and spending time with family and friends.


Lauren Lemonious


Lauren Lemonious is a sophomore urban studies and public policy major from Detroit. She joined the Melton Foundation for the opportunity to learn about different cultures and to work to bring positive change to the world. Lauren is a lifelong nerd and enjoys just having a good time! For anything else, just ask.



Jasmine Preston


Jasmine Preston is a 20-year-old junior, majoring in international business. She was born and raised in New Orleans. During her years in high school, she committed herself to student government, the Xavier Preparatory Chorus, and community service. She is a hardworking, multi-talented, extremely creative, and very ambitious young lady. She brings an optimistic attitude to all her endeavors. Her mission is to surpass expectations through innovative services and creative management. Her first priority is to stand behind the Melton Foundation’s core values and become a positive light through the world.
Jasmine’s offices include lead fellow of the Melton Foundation, former vice president of Dillard University’s Student Council, and current member of the Junior Operative Committee.

After graduating from Dillard University, she plans to attend graduate school and enroll in NYU’s fashion institute. Her ultimate goal is to be an inspiration for young people.

Jasmine’s interests includes studying, singing, mentoring young people, spending quality time with her family, hanging with friends, and most importantly, attending worship services.



Juan Serrano

Juan Serrano was born in Detroit. Over a period of six years, his family moved all over the United States, from Michigan to Texas and finally to South Carolina. Since both of his parents served in the armed forces, he traveled frequently. When their careers offered positions overseas, he had the great opportunity at a young age to travel abroad. He lived in dynamic places such as Chisinau, Moldova; Dhaka, Bangladesh; and Larissa, Greece. These travels embedded in him a passion for international exposure. This passion is what drives his current and future aspirations in life.
After eight years abroad, he returned to the United States to attend high school in Fayetteville, Ga. He considers these four years to have been paramount in his development as a young man. He chose to attend Dillard University specifically for the Melton Foundation. He had family members that attended Dillard and they all spoke highly of the program. When the spring of 2009 came, there was a lot of pressure on him to gain acceptance into the foundation.
When Juan was accepted as a junior fellow to the Melton Foundation, he was eager to go abroad. From New Orleans to Germany and more recently to China, he laughed and learned with fellows from all over the world. The Melton Foundation has proven to be a tightly-knit family whose existence will undoubtedly impact positive change on a global scale. He is fortunate to be a part of such an illustrious organization. He looks forward to the world of possibility that now lies within his reach.



Bridget Sisney


Jackson, Miss., native Bridget Danielle Sisney was born May 14, 1991, the youngest daughter of Stanley and Dora Sisney. She majors in biology and aspires to participate in an early medical school selection program, and dual M.D./Ph.D degree program in the near future. Bridget stays actively involved on campus by holding positions both as the 2010-2011 Student Government Association chaplain and as a member of the VisionQuest Liturgical Praise Dance Team, in addition to her involvement with the Melton Foundation. Bridget also mentors at-risk youth with the Goodwill GoodGuides Program. In her free time, Bridget enjoys dancing, playing Mancala, and sitting outside in nature. Bridget's long-term goals revolve around becoming a pediatric geneticist, enabling her to provide health care to infants and adolescents affected by genetic disorders.


Andree Tarvin-Pyles

Andree Tarvin-Pyles is an African-American male from Los Angeles. He is a graduating senior studying international business at Dillard University. Although he is currently excelling academically, holding a 3.8 grade point average, he finished high school with just a 2.3 average.
Throughout his tenure at Dillard University, Mr. Tarvin-Pyles has been involved in countless community service projects, including working with Brad Pitt´s Make It Right Foundation. When not involved with his studies or community service projects, he tutors at the MLK charter school in New Orleans’s Ninth Ward, and tutors Spanish on behalf of the university’s Student Support Services program. Mr. Tarvin-Pyles is also an active member of the Melton Foundation, and as a freshman, he was elected vice-lead fellow. The following year he became lead fellow for the organization.
Mr. Tarvin-Pyles is also active off campus. He is part of the United Negro College Fund’s Special Programs Institute for International Public Policy. The organization offers six-year fellowships that prepare young people for the field of international affairs. Mr. Tarvin-Pyles also works with non-profit groups such as Inspiration 52 and One Child At A Time, both of which work with inner-city youth. He has served as both a mentor and tutor for both organizations. Mr. Tarvin has studied in Spain and plans to teach English in Temuco, Chile in the coming year.
