                                                   Advocate of the Month:

The Advance expresses its appreciation to the Advocates of the Month for August, Rev. & Mrs. Dale and Miriam Smith. As Conference Coordinator for Missionary Support for the California-Pacific Annual Conference, Rev. Smith has been instrumental in seeing a major increase in the number of Covenant Relationships there. The Smiths work with congregations to recognize their Covenants, prepare an annual directory of missionaries connected to Cal-Pac, organize an annual Conference Missionary Luncheon, and prepare a Missionary Devotions booklet for Advent.

Congregations in Cal-Pac have responded. In 2009, missionary support totaled over $220,000. The Smiths' efforts are making the hopes of mission a reality in countries throughout the world. Thank you, Dale and Miriam!

Did You Know?
A well-planned will is often the centerpiece of an effective and thoughtful estate plan and therefore deserves careful attention. Yet in spite of this, it is estimated that more than half of adult Americans reportedly do not have a will. Well developed estate plans allow you to make charitable that may also significantly reduce estate settlement costs for your heirs.

And remember--a charitable bequest or endowment gift is a meaningful way of memorializing someone special to you while simultaneously leaving a lasting legacy that ensures future missionary and Advance project support.

With so many options, planned giving may seem confusing. It doesn't have to be. Please contact The Advance by phone (440-816-1270) or e-mail Barbara Bibbee (bbibbee@gbgm-umc.org) for more information regarding procedures, specific legal language, and tax ID numbers that should be used. We will be happy to assist you and your advisors as you consider the charitable dimension of your plans.

Updates

With sadness, The Advance shares the news of the death of Dan Terry. A United Methodist layman, Terry was with a group of medical care providers at an eye-care camp in a remote location in northeastern Afghanistan that was attacked on August 6. He is survived by his wife, three adult daughters, and a grandchild. The Advance offers sympathy to Terry's family, as well as all congregations and individuals who were in a Covenant Relationship with him.
