 Advocate of the Month:

February's Advocates of the Month are the youth of First United Methodist Church in Grand Prairie, Texas, especially Mandy McSwain and Karah Nicole Joye. Mandy and Karah came up with the idea of selling "Hacky Sacks for Haiti." For $5.00, the buyer receives a hacky sack (a footbag for various kicking games), and the First United Methodist Church youth will also send a hacky sack to a Haitian boy or girl, with all proceeds going to Haiti Emergency, Advance #418325. The Advance salutes the First United Methodist Church youth for their creativity and generosity.

2009-12 Advance Guide and
Supplement is now a KIT.

The Advance is an official program of The United Methodist Church for voluntary, designated, second-mile giving. Through The Advance, United Methodist annual conferences, districts, local churches, and organizations - and individuals and families - may choose to support particular, approved mission programs or mission personnel with their financial gifts. One hundred percent of all Advance giving goes to the chosen mission project or ministry.

Since the founding of The Advance in 1948, The Advance has helped channel over three million gifts totaling over one billion dollars to thousands of projects and ministries around the world to help them grow and improve their capacity to serve their communities.  The Advance is part of the General Board of Global Ministries.

The Advance strives to be the leading conduit for United Methodist designated giving. We offer the church an integrated package to channel designated giving to connectional projects and mission personnel, working with church leaders around the world to ensure that approved projects are aligned with the goals of The United Methodist Church in the local area, help develop partnerships that are mutually advantageous, tell the story of projects and missionaries, and report how giving is making an impact.

In 2007, Bishop Sudarshana Devadhar, Greater New Jersey Conference, sought a new way to connect youth to The Advance, the denomination's giving channel dedicated to mission. Two years later, youth recognize “B1” as the response to the bishop's request.

B1—for "one being, being one”—raises awareness and funding for projects that empower the poor and encourages youth to understand the unjust systems that sustain poverty in our world. More than an event, B1 is an introduction and an invitation to a different way of life. Youth become aware of connections between them and their sisters and brothers in Chile, Ghana, Virginia and many other places around the world. B1 allows youth to experience connectionalism firsthand. They see how global problems connect to their choices in life. They consider how Scripture connects to their lives and how God calls youth all to connect their gifts and talents to the needs in their communities.
