What is Human Relations Day?
Human Relations Day is one of the six churchwide Special Sundays with offerings of The United Methodist Church. Human Relations Day strengthens United Methodist outreach to communities in the United States and Puerto Rico, encouraging social justice and work with at-risk youth.


When is Human Relations Day celebrated?
Human Relations Day is celebrated on the Sunday before the national observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.

Can our church celebrate Human Relations Day at a different time?
Yes! If your local church needs to celebrate Human Relations Day on a different, date, that is fine! Don’t let the given dates prohibit your local church from celebrating Human Relations Day if there is a time conflict.

What exactly will the Human Relations Day offering go to?
The Human Relations Day offering receipts will be allocated and administered as follows:

  1. Community Developers Program: 57 percent (administered by the General Board of Global Ministries) For more information about the Community Developers Program, please visit the General Board of Global Ministries website
  2. United Methodist Voluntary Services Program: 33 percent (administered by the (General Board of Global Ministries); For more information about the Voluntary Services Program, please visit the General Board of Global Ministries website.
  3. Youth Offender Rehabilitation Program: 10 percent (administered by the General Board of Church and Society.

Does any of our offering pay for administrative costs?
Each of the ministries that rely on support from the individual offerings contributes collaboratively to the promotion of these six churchwide Special Sundays.

I’ve heard the Human Relations Day offering encourages social justice and work with at-risk youth. What does that mean?
A few examples will provide answers:

  • A community developer, based at a Florida United Methodist church, directs a ministry for school-age children and youth. The “primary focus is to help the kids see Jesus and to help them grow developmentally and spiritually.”
  • In Little Rock, Ark., another community developer project—at Theressa Hoover UMC—oversees 12 ministries providing day care, after-school activities, gang intervention, jobs training, substance-abuse treatment, affordable/supportive housing and more.
  • A program in Wilmington, Del., offers guidance and a caring community for at-risk women, ages 12 to 17. Participants focus on life skills such as improving school performance, finding a job, managing time and money, resolving conflict and setting goals.

In 2012, 538,278 was remitted, in 2011, $548,840 was remitted and in 2010, $500,281 was remitted.

Where should a local church send the money that is collected on a special Sunday?
Local churches should forward the offering to the conference treasurer’s office.
