Funds enable college study
Through the General Board of Higher Education & Ministry (GBHEM), in 2009 a total of $55,700 in scholarships and loans is assisting college students who are members of churches in the Oklahoma Conference.
The United Methodist Student Day offering may assist a seminary student called to be a pastor or a missionary. Maybe it will enable a student to complete nursing school or get an education degree.
Nov. 22 was designated as United Methodist Student Day, one of the Special Sundays of the Church year. GBHEM oversees the program and directs the offerings into scholarships and loans to UM students in many fields of study. Each year, 10 percent of the contributions also are returned to the annual conferences for merit scholarships.
Below are the names of Oklahoma Conference recipients of GBHEM support in 2009. The information is provided by GBHEM’s Office of Loans and Scholarships.

“Leading up to and throughout
college, I looked for a way to
express my faith in everyday life.”
The people in Melissa Wheatley’s home church, Collierville United Methodist, are no strangers to giving – especially when it comes to putting a little extra in the offering plate on United Methodist Student Day. The Tennessee congregation knows their gift will reap what it sows because of the support for Melissa, a recent graduate and longtime church member. Now that she’s finished school, she plans a career in which she can use her dual degree in audio engineering and religion and the arts.
“Technology, combined with tradition, enhances the worship experience,” Melissa said. “I hope to work in a church where the skills I learned in college can bring people closer to each other and to God.”
Melissa has been blessed by her home church, and by the generosity of the entire United Methodist denomination. Every year, hundreds of students like her receive scholarships and loans funded by United Methodist Student Day. In today’s economy, your contributions are needed more than ever. Without your gifts, many students may be turned away.
