HRD: Young adult credits church with changing his life - April 2010

“Growing up in the United States was a challenge since I was an immigrant from Vietnam,” said Truong Le. “I constantly had to prove myself, and work extra hard. God . . . provided me with more than enough.”

Le’s journey to employment with the General Board of Discipleship (GBOD), Nashville, Tenn., began at Wesley United Methodist Church, San Diego. His pastor recommended him for JustUs Youth, a social justice movement related to United Methodism’s National Community Developers Program.

Through JustUs Youth, supported by the annual Human Relations Day offering, young adults develop relationships worldwide and receive tools to position themselves as leaders within The United Methodist Church.

It proved life changing for Le. “Seeing how The United Methodist Church works brought me to a new understanding of God and religion.

“Ministry is not just local but global,” he added. “I began to see things in a bigger picture, bigger vision and bigger heart to love others.” Le credits JustUs Youth with leading him to the GBOD, “which is a really big step.”

Involvement with JustUs Youth allowed Le to be part of a monitoring program at the 2008 General Conference. He described it as “the most memorable JustUs Youth experience. I cannot help but to seek God.

“The church should support JustUs Youth,” Le added, “because it helped me to become the Christian I am today.

“Having exposure to The United Methodist Church and awareness (of) young people’s struggles in the church helped gain my willingness to work with the Young People’s Ministries. I make sure our online presence is up to date with today’s technologies and help staff works effectively with the technical know-how.”

Looking toward the future, Le’s goals are to “follow where God leads me” and to “become a youth minister.

“I trust God and my faith has never been stronger.”
